5 Natural Ways to Fix a Patchy Beard

1. Grow It Out 

I know. I know. We’ve already established that you have an issue getting your hairs to grow.  And, even for the seasoned professional, growing a beard out is easier said than done. However, giving every single follicle time to make an appearance is crucial to minimizing patchiness. Plus, it will allow you to comb longer hairs over those bare patches if they never do manage to fill out. 

Of course, the process of growing it out will likely be agonizingly slow as a full beard can take two to four months to fully come in. However, doing so will allow each hair enough time to break through your skin so you can trim the entire bush to one even level. Then, even if you do have a few patches, they’ll be less noticeable overall. 

2. Moisturize and Hydrate

One of the best ways to minimize itching and stimulate beard growth is to moisturize your face, chin and neck. Use beard oil with menthol to increase blood flow and potentially thicken and accelerate growth, working the product in between each hair. You might also use jojoba oil, which is similar to the sebum that your skin naturally excretes. 

Every part of your body can benefit from proper hydration, including your beard. Thus, drinking plenty of water and eating foods high in H2O — think cucumbers and watermelon — can also maximize your beard’s potential. The more you drink, the less likely your hairs are to fall out and break, which is great news for guys like you. 

3. Alter Your Diet

Testosterone is essential for building muscle and keeping things interesting in the bedroom, but did you know that it’s also great for hair growth? That’s right. This powerhouse of a hormone is key to growing a thicker, fuller beard and it’s probably hiding in your fridge at this very moment. 

Got milk? Fortified plant milks and dairy products with vitamin D can increase testosterone levels in men. Fatty fish, extra-virgin olive oil, onions, leafy greens and pomegranates are also effective testosterone boosters. Meanwhile, processed foods and alcohol share links with low levels of this essential hormone. Therefore, you may need to reassess your diet and make some alterations if your main goals include enlarging your beard and shrinking your stomach. 

4. Maintain a Consistent Sleep Schedule

Melatonin, a hormone that your body produces while you sleep, also plays a key role in hair growth. Therefore, it’s important to get the recommended seven to eight hours of sleep each night. Otherwise, your beard may not receive enough melatonin. As a result, your follicles will become more prone to falling out. 

Fill in those patches quicker by maintaining a consistent sleep schedule. Go to bed and wake up at the same time each day and avoid taking midday naps. You might also remove all televisions and mobile devices from the bedroom to encourage a deeper, more restul sleep.   

5. Practice Self-Care

Today’s gentleman faces much more stress than the generations before him. Unfortunately, the extra anxiety that comes with balancing work, a social life, relationships and personal growth can eventually cause your hair to fall out — if you don’t manage to pull it out first. 

For the sake of your beard and your overall health, it’s wise to practice self-care and consciously destress throughout the day. Embracing the Beard You Have

If you’ve tried all of the above to no avail, it may be time to simply embrace the beard you have. While it may be patchier than you’d like, it’s better than walking around with a full babyface.
