How to Keep Your Car From Getting Stolen

In 2016, it’s estimated that more than 750,000 vehicles were stolen around the country. No one wants to think about it, but cars are stolen every single day. Thankfully, you can do plenty of things to prevent your vehicle from being taken. Here are four tips and tricks to help protect your investment.
1. Move Your Valuables
Most of us leave stuff in the car we don’t want to carry with us, but if you leave valuables in sight, you’re increasing your chances that someone will break into your vehicle.
The best rule of thumb is to make it look like there isn’t anything worth taking in your car. If you have to leave valuables in your vehicle, store them in your trunk before you get to your destination. Putting them in the back once you get where you’re going is just inviting a witness to come back and break into your car later.
2. Park In A Secure Location
Where do you park your car at home? What about at work? One of the most natural things you can do to prevent car theft is to be smart about where you park.
Ideally, you want to try to park your car in a garage, whether you’re at home or the office. A secure garage will deter casual car thieves from trying to take your ride. Most thieves are looking for easy marks — pop a door, hot wire and go.
You could even upgrade your garage while you’re at it. An insulated garage door doesn’t just make your garage maintain a more comfortable temperature — it can also make it harder for a thief to get in and steal your car. If you live or work in a neighborhood with high crime rates, you can expand your home’s security system to include your garage, as well.
If you have to park outside, on the street or your driveway, make sure you park in well-lit areas that get a lot of traffic. Parking in the dark or remote areas is inviting someone to come and steal your car.
3. Lock the Doors
This might seem like common sense, but many cars are broken into because the driver neglects to lock their doors. While a locked door might not deter a determined thief, it will stop someone who is looking for an easy score. Locking the doors in most modern cars also sets the alarm, which leads us into our next point.
4. Use Your Car Alarm
You probably have a “Protected by (Security Company)” sign in your yard if you have a security system installed in your home. These signs are more than just free advertisements for the security company — they can also serve as a way to deter burglars. Having a security system sticker on your car does the same thing — but just having a label isn’t always enough. If your car doesn’t have an alarm, consider installing an aftermarket security system or having one professionally installed.
Keeping your car safe from thieves doesn’t have to be expensive or time-consuming. Just being smarter about where you park and removing your valuables from the car can make a world of difference.
