A new Quentin Tarantino movie is an exciting thought for fans, but that also means they’re getting closer to the last time they’ll see him direct. If you follow Tarantino, it can be nerve-racking to wonder if his next film will end his career. Maybe it will, maybe it won’t. For now, this is what we know about his next film.

Reservoir Dogs was Quentin Tarantino’s first feature-length film about a heist of a jewelry store gone wrong. It’s considered a great independent film containing Tarantino’s trademark humor, violent crime scenarios, profanity, pop culture references and nonlinear storytelling.

It’s clear that Tarantino likes to work with the same actors, as seen in Django Unchained and The Hateful Eight, which cast Samuel L. Jackson. In Django Unchained, he particularly had a memorable performance as Stephen, one of the most treacherous characters in film history.
Late Career — Becoming a Hollywood Legend
In the latter half of his career, Tarantino’s focus shifted away from filmmaking and toward other pursuits. He released Once Upon a Time in Hollywood in 2019, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, where he really shows off his comedic timing and talent.
Tarantino released a novelization of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood in 2021 and Cinema Speculations in 2022. He premiered his podcast with Roger Avary, also in 2022. In 2026, he is currently working on a play called The Popinjay Cavalier.

As far back as 2016, we can confirm that Tarantino intends to only make 10 movies. With that said, he has walked back that statement a few times, stating that he would definitely make 10 films, but direct another one when he’s older.
It’s not exactly clear why he only wants to make 10. Some fans think it’s because, if he only makes 10, all 10 movies would make it to a “Top 10 Movies” list. Others think it’s because 10 is a nice, even number. But unless everyone else counts Kill Bill: Volumes 1 and 2 as one movie, that ship has sailed. Even more so if you don’t count his other projects, productions and plays.
Maybe Tarantino wanted a goal. But many fans think he shot himself in the foot with this promise. It means that the director has an “end date,” and that can be a lot of pressure.

Quentin Tarantino’s final movie was supposed to be “The Movie Critic,” which was supposed to be a character study. He scrapped his plans in 2024 because he felt the film would have been too much like Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. He also didn’t think anyone would want to see a movie about a movie critic. According to his fans, that’s probably true.
But it’s likely only true because fans don’t want his final movie to be his final movie. Still, we’re approaching nearly a decade since Tarantino released a film. It’s making fans wonder what’s taking so long. Maybe it’s the pressure. You would want your last film to be your best.
Tarantino didn’t seem excited about what he wrote. Artists have the right to dismiss the project if it doesn’t feel right. For now, the director is focusing on his stage play, The Popinjay Cavalier.
What Is Quentin Tarantino Planning Next?
As of July 2026, there isn’t a lot of information surrounding Tarantino’s final film. In an interview with Screen Daily, Robert Richardson updated fans about the next film and described it as “something fresh.” Richardson says pre-production might start in summer 2027.
Tarantino is also reportedly writing and co-directing a six-part miniseries set in the 1930s, with Sylvester Stallone also expected to co-direct. Tarantino released his 4-hour cut of Kill Bill, subtitled “The Whole Bloody Affair.” In November 2026, a sequel spinoff of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood will be released. Tarantino didn’t direct the film, but he did help with the script. Instead, David Fincher took the helm.
What Might Quentin Tarantino Do After His Final Film?

It’s hard to say what the legendary director will do once he films his tenth. He may continue with his podcast because he seems to enjoy it. It’s been a while since he released an episode, but he’s been busy with other projects. Most likely, he’ll continue to produce or exhibit films.
Tarantino is also a movie critic on Rotten Tomatoes, though his last review was in 2022. He likes to review relatively unknown movies, which can help them get more press. Becoming a critic would be a good transition from directing. It’s also possible that Tarantino became a critic to research his now-scrapped film, The Movie Critic, and may not return to it.
Maybe it seems anticlimactic for such a famous director to relax after decades of amazing films, but it may be what he wants. If he loves to direct, he’ll continue to do so. If not, he’ll switch careers. We think he’ll stay in the movie industry in some capacity.

If Robert Richardson is right and pre-production is happening in summer 2027, we may not see the film until 2029. That would mark a full decade since the release of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood in 2019. Either way, we’re excited for what he’ll come up with.
