Though all sports fan bases have good and bad apples, Eagles fans and others in the City of Brotherly Love are famous for going a bridge too far to defend their team spirit. Recent events have shown how they’ve gone overboard and why they need to calm down — especially with what’s on the line this year. If we want to be recognized as proper NFC champions, we’ve got to act like it we deserve it.
The Recent Shenanigans of Angry Eagles Fans
The Eagles fan base has been infamous for the past few years, but let’s focus on recent events. Philadelphia hosted Green Bay on Jan. 12 in the 2025 NFL Playoffs. The Eagles were in control for most of the game, so some Philly fans started talking smack to traveling Packer fans.
In a recently viral video, a man wearing Eagles gear taunted a woman wearing a Packers jersey and beanie. Despite the Green Bay supporter not reacting to his derogatory comments, the man kept going and made Eagles fans look bad. The fan has been banned from Eagles home games and fired from his job, so he won’t see Saquon Barkley’s highlight plays in person anytime soon.
This recent incident is a black mark on an otherwise excellent season for the Eagles. Since the bye week, Philadelphia has been one of the best teams in the league. A lone loss to the Commanders — a game in which Jalen Hurts left early with a concussion — is the only L on the schedule since Week Five. While the incident is unfortunate, it’s not unprecedented.
Eagles Fans Have Always Been Quick to Start a Riot
Maybe there’s something in the air in Philadelphia. If there’s another explanation, we’d love to hear it. The city’s sports fans have been rabidly passionate for decades. Have you ever seen Eagles fans throw snowballs at Santa Claus? While it may seem like an average Sunday activity for today’s Philly supporters, this incident is unique in sports history.
In 1968, the Eagles had a dismal season and were among the league’s worst teams. Fans were angry entering their Dec. 15 game against the Vikings. So, they concentrated their frustrations on a man dressed as Santa Claus. After watching their quarterback throw an interception that bitterly cold, snowy day, they responded by throwing snowballs at St. Nicholas.
If you think emotions ran high in the NFL Wild Card round, they’ll worsen after the Super Bowl. Eagles fans are notorious for misbehaving regardless of the outcome. After winning the championship in 2018, Philly residents wreaked havoc in the streets by lighting fires and smashing windows. Meanwhile, fans climbed traffic lights and overturned cars following their team’s 2023 loss to the Chiefs.
Why Philly Fans Have an Edge
Philadelphia sports fans have an outsized reputation for wacky behavior, garnering national attention. Where naysayers see Eagles games as an excuse to sow chaos and destruction, athletes prefer their fans to show passion and intensity instead of apathy.
One possible explanation is Philly’s proximity to New York City. According to one sports science expert, Philadelphia carries a chip on its shoulder because of the city’s reputation. New York City has the glitz, glamour and celebrities, whereas Philadelphia has a working-class history with less fame and fortune. As the underdogs, they may feel the need to show out.
The attitude is even more pronounced considering the stadium’s location. Lincoln Financial Field is in the southern part of the city, close to working-class neighborhoods. Fans can easily access the stadium by train, bus or foot. Therefore, you see more grit inside and outside the premises. Football fans aren’t the only ones who get rowdy — the city’s baseball and hockey fans are just as eager to show their excitement.
Suggestions for Eagles Fans Moving Forward
The Eagles are on the cusp of history for the next few weeks. What’s our message to the fans? Calm the hell down! Act like we’ve been here before. The team has been to two Super Bowls in the last decade and could have more trophies in the future. Our rivals — the $9 billion Dallas Cowboys — cannot relate.
Some sports fans will always picture Philadelphia as a city with chaotic fans. While the stereotypes can be true, we can control the narrative by acting like a calm fanbase. Other towns have fiery followers, but they don’t act like the folks on Broad Street do. Be passionate about our team while having some sense, especially when we’re out in public.
If the Eagles win it all this year, that’s great! If not, act as maturely as the players will. Do you expect Jalen Hurts to start fires in the streets? Certainly, you won’t see Nick Sirianni or AJ Brown starting fights and tipping cars over. Fans expect professionalism from the players, and the reverse should be true.
Speaking to the Die-Hard Philadelphia Eagles Fans
Supporting a championship-caliber team is a privilege, and it comes with pressure. How we handle the expectations can define who we are as fans. Unfortunately, the stereotypes surrounding Eagles fans predict they are more likely to start a riot or throw snowballs at Santa Claus than to win or lose gracefully. We hope the fan base calms down for the next few weeks and flips the narrative.
Go Birds.
