Marvel vs. Capcom is a legendary game series, but a newcomer, Marvel Token, has shown up to potentially take away that crown. But will it actually replace the nostalgic game?

What Is Marvel vs. Capcom?

A bunch of comic books

The Marvel vs. Capcom series is a crossover fighting video game franchise developed and published by Capcom. It pits superheroes and villains from Marvel Comics against characters from Capcom’s famous video game properties, like Street Fighter, Mega Man and Darkstalkers.

Marvel vs. Capcom 2, specifically, is considered the best game in the franchise. Some people would even say it’s the best Marvel game, next to Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. Released on the Sega Dreamcast in the early 2000s, it’s celebrated for its chaotic gameplay, massive roster and impact on the competitive gaming community.

The core features of this game are similar to what you’ll find in Marvel Tokon:

  • 3v3 tag-team combat: Players select a team of three characters. Unlike Marvel Tōkon, each character maintains their own individual health bar.
  • 56-character roster: The game features an immense lineup of 28 Marvel characters, like Wolverine and Magneto, and 28 Capcom characters, like Ryu and Strider Hiryu.
  • Character assists: When choosing your team, you select an “Assist Type,” like Alpha, Beta or Gamma, for each fighter. This allows off-screen teammates to jump in temporarily to perform a specific attack, heal or defend.
  • Fast-paced air combos: The game engine encourages frantic gameplay with “Variable Air Combos,” letting players launch opponents into the sky and juggle them.
  • Iconic soundtrack: The game is famous for its upbeat jazz-fusion soundtrack, most notably the catchy character selection theme, “I Wanna Take You for a Ride.”

The big negative for Marvel vs. Capcom 2 was that it was notoriously difficult to play on modern hardware due to expired licensing agreements, which led to digital versions being delisted.

However, it officially returned in September 2024 with the Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics, which made the game playable with modern features like rollback netcode on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Steam.

What Is Marvel Tokon?

a lot of comics

Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls is a fighting 4v4 tag-team video game featuring characters from the Marvel Universe. Developed by fighting game studio Arc System Works and published by Sony, the game was released on August 6, 2026, for the PlayStation 5 and PC.

The game sets itself apart from traditional tag-team fighters like Marvel vs. Capcom 2 with a few unique twists.

  • Shared health bar: Unlike standard tag games, where each character has their own life bar, your entire four-character team shares one single health bar.
  • Accessible tagging: Because of the shared health pool, players don’t have to master all four characters immediately. You can focus on learning one main fighter and use the other three purely for quick “assist” attacks.
  • Mid-match assembly: Players start a match with only two active characters and need to “assemble” the remaining two as the fight goes on to unlock bigger super moves and extend their health gauge.
  • 64-player lobbies: The online multiplayer component features massive social lobbies that can host up to 64 players simultaneously for matches and community interaction.

This game also has a story mode with a single-player narrative. Written by prominent comic author Kieron Gillen, it centers on the Champion of the Universe. The immortal being challenges Earth’s mightiest heroes and villains to a tournament. If they don’t win, the planet is destroyed.

The story is split into five episodes presented as motion comics, each illustrated by a different famous mangaka or comic book artist. These episodes follow canonical groups, such as the Fighting Avengers, the Unbreakable X-Men and the Amazing Guardians.

Will Marvel Token Steal Marvel vs. Capcom’s Crown?

a whole bunch of comics

That depends on what you think. Both games have many similarities, but there are major differences that may make you consider which game is better.

Similarities

There are four major similarities between the two games. Both games rely heavily on using off-screen teammates to jump in, perform a quick attack and jump back out to extend combos or protect the active fighter. Neither game is a grounded, realistic fighter. Both feature screen-filling hyper moves, massive laser beams and high-flying aerial juggles that throttle opponents.

Both titles draw heavily on deep Marvel lore, giving obscure comic characters equal footing with major icons like Spider-Man, Iron Man and Wolverine. Match velocity is exceptionally fast in both games. A single mistake can lead to massive, devastating combo damage.

Both do have match-making, but Marvel vs. Capcom 2’s is more clunky than Marvel Token.

Differences

The first difference is in the health and team philosophy. In Marvel vs. Capcom, when a character’s health drops to zero, they’re eliminated, and your next character snaps into the match. You must learn how to play all three characters to be fully competitive. In Marvel Tokon, there’s a shared health bar. Your entire team stands or falls together.

Another difference is the Momentum and Assemble mechanic. In Marvel vs. Capcom 2, you have access to your entire three-character strategy, all assists and all team-based super moves from the exact moment the round begins. In Marvel Tokon, matches start as a smaller 2v2 skirmish. You have to actively fight and build meter to “assemble” the 3rd and 4th members of your squad mid-match, expanding your max health and unlocking larger cinematic finishers.

The last difference is in the aesthetic and presentation. Marvel vs. Capcom 2 features a nostalgic 2D pixel-art aesthetic paired with an upbeat soundtrack. The story is minimal, focusing purely on arcade tournament action. On the other hand, Marvel Token uses Arc System Works’ modern 3D engine, making the game look like a playable high-budget anime movie. It also features a heavy, story-driven single-player campaign, styled after motion comics.

Overall Feel

The mechanical similarities are one thing, but does Marvel Tokon feel like Marvel vs. Capcom 2? The answer is, not really. It has many of its own mechanics and a combo system that makes the game feel very different. While the graphics are an homage to the past, Marvel Tokon improves on what Marvel vs. Capcom 2 lacked, particularly in matchmaking.

In the end, Marvel Token and Marvel vs. Capcom 2 are different experiences. One focuses on Marvel while the other is a crossover. Instead of looking at one replacing the other, look at it as two great games. Instead of one chocolate cake, you get two chocolate cakes.

Give Praise to Both Marvel Games

Both Marvel games are great in their own way and deserve a look the next time you want to start scrapping with your friends. If classic, nostalgic games are your thing, try Marvel vs. Capcom 2. If you want a modern engine, give Marvel Token a try.
