All the Engine Options You Could Want

One of the best things about the 2020 F-150 is the sheer number of options available. You’ll find something for nearly every application, from the small 2.7-liter Turbocharged Ecoboost engine to the 3.5-liter Ecoboost or a high-output Ecoboost of the same size. There’s also 3.3-liter V-6 and 5.0-liter V-8 engines to choose from. If you need something with a bit more readily available torque, you can also opt for the 3.0-liter Power Stroke Turbo Diesel engine. 

Lighter Than the Competition

Pickup trucks traditionally use steel for everything from their frame to their bodywork. The 2020 F-150 sheds a few pounds by replacing many of the steel body panels with aluminum. In addition to cutting down the truck’s curb weight, the aluminum panels are less expensive to fix if they get damaged. In one case, after a massive hailstorm hit Texas, a dealership found that it cost almost $2,000 less to repair their damaged F-150s with aluminum bodies than it would for the same trucks with steel exteriors. 

Getting the Job Done

Regardless of the options and features you choose, every single 2020 F-150 has one thing in common. They’ll get the job done. The base F-150 XL can tow up to 7,000 pounds, even without the optional towing package. If you plan on doing a lot of towing, the best engine option isn’t the big V-8, but the twin-turbo V-6, which can pull up to 13,200 pounds. 

Holding Off Until 2021

While this all sounds fantastic, you still might want to hold off until the 2021 models start hitting showroom floors. The F-150 is getting a redesign for 2021, and while it might not be as dramatic as the switch to aluminum panels in 2020, there’s still a lot to look forward to with this new design.

The headlights and taillights are getting an upgrade, and designers are working to improve the interior to make it more comfortable and lush. In addition to the various engine options, you’ll also be able to opt for a hybrid for the first time.
