In contrast, Roboteos’ sun-tracking mechanism uses GPS and a sensor-based internal measurement unit to actually allow the roof-mounted 400-watt solar panel to follow the sun’s path. It finds the optimal angle, leading to much higher energy capture levels than fixed panels. The company claims its system provides 2.5 times the energy of static roof panels of the same wattage.
The Heliotrope 1.0’s motorized system raises and moves the solar panel off your vehicle’s roof. When closed, the system is contained in a slim box only six inches higher than the roof’s surface. Static rooftop panels require less work but don’t offer as much precision when it comes to energy capture. Hood solar panels can be easier to clean since they’re more accessible, but they have a smaller surface area, leading to lower energy capture, and are more prone to damage from road debris. Sun-tracking panels like the Heliotrope 1.0 have automatic features that make them largely hands-off and highly exact for optimal energy efficiency.

Solar boat canopies collect energy to power a sea-faring vessel or the appliances and back-up equipment inside. Attaching sun-tracking panels to boats could lead to more precise energy generation.
