The highly anticipated “Superman” graced the screens last July 11 as a part of a broader reboot of the DC Universe under James Gunn. His vision for the character was pretty clear — kind, compassionate, more vulnerable, relatable and human. The new Superman movie absolutely faced pressure to be “better” than Zack Snyder’s “Man of Steel,” where Henry Cavill portrayed a god-like figure grappling with his place in a cynical world.

The comparisons plagued the online forums for months, with eager fans wondering how David Corenswet would play the well-loved character after taking up the mantle from an equally well-loved Henry. Here’s what we think this reboot did better than its predecessor.

1. Opening Box Office Numbers

For starters, the new Superman movie has successfully topped “Man of Steel’s” opening weekend numbers, amassing $122 million domestically and $217 million for a global cumulative gross. This was close to the numbers of “Man of Steel,” raking in $116 million and over $200 million globally over four days.

However, fans of Snyder’s film pointed out the need to adjust for inflation. “Superman” was off to a flying start and received various positive critical acclaim, and we think the overwhelming welcome and staggering number deserve the number one spot on this list.

2. More Comic-Accurate

The 2025 “Superman” movie didn’t bore viewers with details when setting up the universe. It simply and flawlessly gets going — even the president of Marvel Studios, Kevin Feige, was astounded. In a press roundtable with various outlets, the president of Marvel Studios shared:

“Look at Superman. It’s clearly not superhero fatigue, right? I liked it a lot. I love how you just jump right into it. You don’t know who Mr. Terrific is? Tough. You’ll figure it out. You don’t know what this is? Just go, go. This is a fully fleshed-out world.”

Meanwhile, “Man of Steel” meandered with flashbacks, wasting too much time on explanations. It also hardly gave hints on what to expect in the next movies. Meanwhile, “Superman” is a treasure trove of Easter eggs, dropping audiences straight into the comic book world. The new film’s more linear approach never lets viewers wonder where the movie will take them, which is better for retaining people’s attention on the screen.

3. Superman Is More Relatable and Human

Corneswet is an incredible catch for the reboot. He’s the epitome of Gunn’s vision — the god-like proportions but with soft, compassionate facial expressions. His character behaves like a goofy and nerdy journalist. He has a soft side for animals and handles challenges with finesse. It’s a stark contrast to Cavill’s pensive, isolated behavior. The new film spends more time on Superman’s perspective and feelings.

In “Man of Steel,” the scale of fighting actions mostly caused damage to general property. This was avoided in Gunn’s “Superman,” where Corneswet’s character is more aware of the consequences. He’s a human and a superhero who feels the weight of every life he saves, and every life he can’t. You can tell he’s a man who has fears and struggles with balancing his own needs with the world’s.

4. Better Support System

Jonathan Kent (more about him later on!) is more encouraging and positive, and Lois Lane is portrayed as an active and supportive partner. Their warm presence creates a strong support system for Clark Kent. Krypto definitely deserves to be on the list. Even though he wasn’t Superman’s, he’s a loyal companion who tags alongside him. A good boy like him deserves a place on the list.

The film delivered Gunn’s signature blend of action and heart, reminiscent of his work on “Guardians of the Galaxy.” Just as fans embraced the Marvel film for its compelling storytelling and witty banter, “Superman” resonates with viewers through its depiction of a hero buoyed by the support of those around him.

5. Lex Luthor

The new movie’s Lex has a clear arc that cements him as the arch-nemesis of Superman. Played by Nicholas Hoult, the film highlights his envy and deep-seated belief that he is the only one fit to lead humanity. This is the Lex Luthor from the comics and animated series that fans know and love. The new movie shows us the intriguing rivalry between the two characters and how their ideologies clash.

Meanwhile, Lex didn’t appear in “Man of Steel,” although he was the main antagonist in its sequel, “Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice,” where he was portrayed by Jesse Eisenberg. Both actors were stellar, though.

6. Rotten Tomato Scores

“Superman” now has an 83% approval rating, while “Man of Steel” has 57%. Despite being released only a few weeks ago, the former already has more than 470 reviews, while the latter only has over 340.

The critical consensus for Snyder’s film was that it was never short of exhilarating action and spectacle, but its serious, dark tone was seen as a major misunderstanding of the character. It’s as if it lacked warmth, hope and heart — three qualities that define the latest Superman.

7. Jonathan Kent

“Man of Steel” fans will seem to agree if we say Pa Kent isn’t the movie’s strongest suit. Kevin Costner played Clark Kent’s adoptive father, who is dedicated to keeping Clark safe from the world. His character was a point of contention for many fans because of his overprotective tendencies. This version is strangely distant, telling his son to hide his true nature, even if it meant not saving people. Remember that “maybe” scene? Yeah, we feel you.

Meanwhile, in the new Superman film, Jonathan Kent is a loving and encouraging father figure who instills a strong moral compass in his son. He keeps conversations alive whenever possible, establishing a healthy relationship with his son. He’s a strong influence who reinforces the hero’s optimism, compassion and kindness.

8. Clark Kent and Lois Lane’s Relationship Felt More Natural

The relationship between Superman and Lois Lane in “Man of Steel” felt more like a plot device. Many top critics commented on how their love story seemed shallow, forced and rushed. Not more than a few days after their meet-up, they are already exclusively dating, giving the audience no strong reason to care about their bond.

On the other hand, in the “Superman” movie, the chemistry between the protagonist and his partner is more palpable. Spoiler alert — the movie started with the characters already knowing each other. It’s a central theme, not a subplot, which makes it easier for viewers to follow Lois as she grapples with the implications of being in love with an alien with god-like powers.

What’s Your Take on The New “Superman” Movie?

In conclusion, we think “Superman” nailed the emotional storyline that we fans loved about the comics. By no means are we saying “Man of Steel” is less superior, but we think the new film has everything we can ask for in a DCEU reboot. What about you — what are your thoughts on the new film?
