Winter is upon us once again, bringing with it that dreaded white cold stuff. When you’re a kid looking out the window at a fresh blanket of snow fills you with wonder and excitement. Now that you’re an adult and have to remove it yourself, it’s not so awe-inspiring. However, you could save a lot of time by skipping the manual labor and switching to an electric snow shovel.

Electric Snow Shovel vs. Snow Blower

The electric snow shovel is the lesser-known little brother of the snow blower. Similar to its older sibling, it features a motor and can remove snow from your path. Both require minimal work to push, while the auger-like mechanism does the rest.

Electric snow shovels are more compact and typically cheaper than snow blowers. However, they usually remove snow in a smaller swathe, don’t throw it as far and can’t handle very deep snow.

For small spots like porches, short paths and steps, an electric snow shovel is ideal. A snow blower may be the better option if you have a large driveway or live in an area with frequent deep snow.

Top Considerations for an Electric Snow Shovel

If an electric snow shovel is a great fit for your needs, you should know some things to look for when choosing your machine.

Clearing Width and Depth

With your clearing area in mind, you’ll want to assess each machine’s removal width and depth. The electric snow shovel you choose will need to handle the amount of snow you get each year. If it can’t keep up with your snow removal needs, you won’t be able to get your money’s worth out of it.

Corded vs. Cordless

You can find corded or cordless versions of an electric snow shovel. Cordless models are a more convenient option since you can take them farther away from an outlet. However, you’re at the mercy of the battery — once it dies, you have to wait for it to charge to be able to finish the job. If you choose a cordless model, ensure the battery life will be long enough to complete your projects.

A corded version is less maneuverable, but it packs a greater punch. Typically these models have a farther throwing power and can handle deeper wetter snow.  You’ll also usually see a higher amperage.

Weight

Even though electric snow removal devices are powered by a motor, you still need to put in the effort to push them. In the case of the automated snow shovel, you also have to hold the handle up in the air like with a traditional model.

Check the weights on each version before purchasing to ensure you won’t get tired of holding it up before the job is done.

Special Features

Many brands offer unique features that are worth considering. Some common ones are an extra battery pack and an adjustable second handle to make moving the device even easier and more ergonomic.

Find an Electric Snow Shovel to Meet Your Needs

When picking the right electric snow shovel to meet your unique needs, you have a lot to consider. A little time now spent researching specs can save you from getting the wrong type of snow removal device.
