Style has always been personal. One man’s fashion statement is another man’s “What happened here?” Beauty sits firmly in the eye of the beholder, and that applies to sneakers just as much as art, cars or questionable facial hair styles. However, once in a while, a shoe comes along that crosses the line. Perhaps the sole is thick enough to plow a field, or the split toe looks suspiciously camel-toe-like. Maybe the neon color could guide airplanes at JFK airport.

The truth is, plenty of these designs have devoted fans, and luxury fashion, with all its icons, embraces ugly sneakers as conversation pieces. But every bold design doesn’t deserve a standing ovation or a “just because” place in the ugliest footwear hall of fame. These Amazon finds proudly wear the title of “worst sneaker design,” and then, to soothe your mind, some suitably fashion-forward but sensible options to consider.

What Makes a Sneaker Ugly?

Not every unusual shoe deserves a place on the “fugly” list. Some become classics because they challenge convention. Others were designed after someone emptied the parts bin onto the factory floor. While you can wear sneakers to ultra-casual and casual events, the choice of design matters.

Most of the worst sneaker designs share three defining traits:

  • Chunky soles: When you look like you are walking on gum — and a lot of it — the design is crossing the line. A little extra cushion helps, but chunky rubber bases that look like the moon landing’s gear become construction equipment, not footwear.
  • Shape: Split toes, exaggerated curves and swollen silhouettes tend to divide opinion immediately. If someone asks whether your shoes belong in a sci-fi movie or on a horse’s feet, you’re probably on the far side of the line.
  • Color: Bright accents work well when balanced. Throw in fluorescent panels, oversized logos, random textures and three competing patterns, and suddenly your shoes become the loudest thing in an art gallery.

The Six Ugliest Sneakers You Can Buy

Ironically, luxury brands have proven that ugly sells. Oversized “dad shoes,” exaggerated basketball sneakers and deliberately awkward designs that may send you to the podiatrist for new foot issues become fashion statements because they stand out. The more people argue about them, the more attention they receive. But it doesn’t mean that curled-up rubber blobs deserve a spot in your closet next to your already dubious pair of custom Crocs with Jibbitz charms. These five may have taken the concept too far.

1. Nike Air Lift Breed Shoes

The Nike Air Lift deserves recognition for staying stubbornly committed to one of the strangest ideas ever put into athletic footwear — giving your big toe its own private bedroom. Originally inspired by barefoot running, the split-toe design certainly has functional fans. Visually, though, it’s hard to ignore the resemblance to a camel’s hoof. Even sneakerinas for ladies feature a toe box design that looks somewhat better, though not much.

2. Poramea Laceless Running Blade Sneakers

If loafers and water shoes ever had a child who spent too much time looking at concept art, you’re probably going to get this. These laceless sneakers feature oversized ventilation holes running straight through the sole, creating a design that’s impossible to ignore. While they may cushion your weight, it begs the question whether gravel, puddles and curious insects see the gaps as open invitations to enter. While lightweight and practical in some situations, except as paired with a suit, being subtle isn’t its strong suit.

3. Kpdwfms Ultra Chunky Platform Sneakers

Chunky runners have been considered fashion fodder for years, but every design movement has its limits. These platform sneakers appear determined to add several inches to your height using enough foam and rubber to resurface a driveway. The oversized soles dominate the design, making your feet resemble mini monster trucks. They make the classic dad shoes seem understated. They’re almost as dramatic as light-up sneakers, which should be left to kids, not worn by adults.

4. ARKKY 3D Printed Sneakers

Three-dimensional printing opened exciting possibilities for footwear, but this probably wasn’t what most people had in mind. The honeycomb shell wraps around the entire shoe, creating a design that looks halfway between futuristic armor and a plastic garden basket. The open structure offers impressive airflow, but from a distance, it also resembles something produced by an industrial printer that ran out of instructions halfway through the job.

5. Nike Shox R4

Nike continues to excel with odd designs, including this equine-friendly sneaker mounted on modified circular columns at the bottom of the sole, which makes one think of bridge pillars or a horse’s shoes. The shock-absorbing columns may be quite functional, but they look like a case of modern architecture that may require a hoof pick when cleaning out your shoes. The white and silver finish does little for functional use.

6. adidas Men’s Crazy 1 Basketball Shoes

Basketball shoes naturally lean toward flashy designs that match brave plays like you just turned into Giannis with three-pointers and dunks, but sometimes restraint stays on the bench. The adidas Crazy line features sculpted curves, oversized panels and enough visual movement to make the shoe appear in motion when you’re standing still. Performance-wise, it’s a capable basketball sneaker. Stylistically, it looks like a concept sketch that accidentally skipped the editing stage.

Wear What Makes You Happy

Fashion has always rewarded people willing to take risks. Sometimes those risks become iconic, at other times, they turn into internet memes. If you genuinely love split toes, towering platforms or shoes that glow like a carnival ride while you get in your steps or hit the trails, wear them proudly.

Confidence has rescued plenty of questionable fashion decisions throughout history. If you’re looking for sneakers you’ll enjoy wearing for years, though, simple proportions, balanced colors and clean lines usually age far better than shock value.
