Mornings can be rough. You start the day groggy, and all you want to do is hit snooze on the alarm clock and go back to bed. Unfortunately, that’s probably not the best choice if you have obligations. Follow these six tips to develop important morning habits that will make your day easier.
1. Get Enough Sleep
When thinking about important morning habits, you can’t forget sleep. Getting enough sleep at night is one of the best ways to start your day. The average adult needs between seven and nine hours of sleep per night. You know your body best to determine how much sleep you need.
When you sleep adequately, you’ll see benefits like an improved mood, lowered risk for health problems, increased energy and a better immune system.
2. Wake Up Early
Some may tell you that you must wake up at 5 a.m. to improve your mornings. That’s great if it works for them, but it may not work for you and others. It all depends on your work schedule and what errands and chores you need to do before work.
Instead of waking up before sunrise, you can wake up early enough to do what you need to do in an efficient amount of time. Rushing to get ready for work can lead to forgetting things, so plan in enought time to take care of yourself.
3. Start With Exercise
If you like fitness, beginning your day with exercise can be the perfect pick-me-up. Walking, jogging, swimming, yoga and weightlifting are just some of the ways you can work out in the morning. If you live in an area with a hot climate, you can beat the heat by exercising in the morning when temperatures are cooler.
You set yourself up for success when you work out early because you feel accomplished. You’ll feel more energized and confident to take on the day ahead of you. Exercise also helps you sleep better, so it can be an important morning habit.
4. Eat a Balanced Breakfast
Aside from sleep, what you eat in the morning may be the most important note on this list. Your breakfast will have a significant impact on your energy levels throughout the day, so it’s important to have a balanced meal. What does that entail, exactly?
A balanced meal incorporates a mix of protein, carbohydrates and fats. Protein can come from your favorite breakfast foods like eggs, sausage, chicken, ham and more. You can get fiber and carbohydrates from fruits like berries, apples, oranges and more. Nutritious fats (like unsaturated fats) come from nuts, nut butter, avocados and fish.
5. Prep Ahead of Time
To make your mornings better, sometimes you need to start the evening before. Prepping ahead of time can make your mornings run much smoother and relieve some stress. You can start as simple as picking out your clothes the night before and laying them out, so you don’t have to decide in the morning.
One of the most important morning habits you can start is meal prepping. You can save leftovers from the night before and eat them for breakfast because you’re just a few microwave minutes away from a hot meal. Some people will make a big batch of food on Sunday and separate the food into meals they can eat throughout the week. A plastic container with your lunch prepared can save you time in the morning because you can grab it and go if you’re in a hurry.
6. Write It Down
Sometimes all you need is a little organization. One way to achieve that is to write down a checklist of what you need to do in the morning. You could write it on a sticky note, on a whiteboard on the fridge, in a notebook or whatever you find best.
Try using SMART goals as a way to have specific, achievable goals you can check off throughout the day. This method is an excellent way to stay organized and boost your confidence and productivity.
Start the Morning Right
Everybody is different when it comes to mornings. You may want to get straight to work, while others want to wake up early and work out. You’re the best person to determine what’s right for you.
There are ways you can make your morning routine better, such as eating a balanced breakfast and prepping the night before. Follow these six tips, and you’ll improve your mornings for yourself and others around you.
