Is this the year you’re investing in a quality electric truck? Electric vehicles are gaining traction, and it’s time to see if sustainability extends to muscle machines where greater horsepower and carrying capacity are part of the buying decision when looking for the best electric trucks coming out.
Explore the top x electric pickups for this year.
The 2025 Rivian R1T Electric Truck
- Retail price: Starts from $71,700
- Horsepower: 1025
- Travel distance: 420 miles
- Best for: Speed and power
Enjoy the best of all worlds with this cross-purpose truck, which features a sleek exterior, now in a Storm Blue finish, and rugged interior functionality with loads of storage space. Thanks to a complete electrical workover, designers removed 44 pounds of cabling and reduced computer modules by 10, from 17 to 7, making for a more streamlined operating system.
The battery system has received a facelift, moving from the typical lithium-ion to a much better quality and more powerful lithium-iron-phosphate type. With its tri-motor and quad-motor designs and all-terrain suspension, this electric pickup has enough power for some light offroading.
The tri-motor setup increases the truck’s capacity, with two motors in the rear and one in the front, making it a powerful competitor with other trucks on the market. The manufacturer claims the R1T can reach 60 miles per hour in 2.5 seconds, possibly making it the fastest e-truck on the market. It’s more than a speedster, and you can comfortably tow 11,000 pounds or load 1,764 pounds — but this will drain the battery much more quickly.
Ford F150 Lightning
- Retail price: Starts at $49,875
- Horsepower: 462-580
- Travel distance: 230-320 miles
- Best for: Practicality and handling
The Ford F150 Lightning is much like the gas-powered Ford F150, with one notable exception in the choice of rear suspension. The electric model has an independent suspension, while the gas model has a shaft suspension. The result and the location of the electric model’s battery make the Lightning much more responsive on the road.
The electric version also rides lower on the road for added stability and roll management. It’s also kinder on your pocket than some other electric vehicles, making it one of the most affordable electric trucks.
If you want to do towing work with your Ford F150 Lightning, you’ll have to spring for the larger battery, as the standard battery only manages a towing load of 7,700 pounds. You can also move a payload of 1,800-2,000 pounds on the back, severely cutting back the battery range.
However, a nice piece of forward-thinking is Ford’s design of the F150 Lightning, which includes using the vehicle as a generator for household use in case of a power outage.
GMC Sierra EV
- Retail price: starts at $99,000
- Horsepower: 754
- Travel distance: 440 miles
- Best for: Longer distances and speed
The Sierra EV comes in the Denali Edition 1, and it features two powerful electric motors, which ensure a powerful drivetrain. This luxury model also goes full-house with all the latest trimmings and nice-to-haves.
But suppose this model is out of your league. In that case, the economy models should start at around $50,000 in 2025, making you eligible for a vehicle tax credit according to the Inflation Reduction Act.
With loads of technologically advanced systems, the Sierra EV solves one of the challenges of large vehicles. With its crab walk system, the wheels rotate to allow the truck to move sideways for easy parking.
Flooring the power pedal makes for a speedy and responsive truck, but take care. Too much acceleration can introduce a slight swing along the road. The Sierra Denali Edition 1 takes only 4.1 seconds to reach 60 miles per hour, so it’s ideal for comfortable highway driving. Speed does cost a bit in design terms, and you can only tow a maximum capacity of 10,000 pounds.
The standard battery offers 205 kilowatts but allows you to overcharge up to 350 kilowatts, adding another 100 miles to your total drive range. What’s impressive is the fast charging. If you find a suitable charging station, you can load up that extra 145 kilowatts in less than 10 minutes of charge time, but always follow the manufacturer’s guidelines to prevent the battery accidentally catching fire, which has become a real threat with electric vehicles.
Chevrolet Silverado EV 2025
- Retail price: starts at $57,095
- Horsepower: 510-760
- Travel distance: 492 miles with the Max Range battery
- Best for: Smooth steering over rough terrain
The Silverado is light and responsive on the road. Its powerful drivetrain offers 510-760 horsepower, and it can travel up to 492 miles on a full charge for the expanded battery model. Efficiency depends on road conditions, load and tire resistance and inflation, which affect the vehicle’s efficiency and battery life.
However, while the truck is quick on acceleration, take care with the brakes, which could have used more effort from manufacturers.
The towing capacity is pretty standard at 12,500 pounds, and the payload capacity is comfortable at 1,800 pounds. The quick charge is also effective, with a charge from empty to full in less than an hour on commercial charging. Specialized charging stations can initiate an overcharge, which gives you another 100 miles to travel.
Dishonorable Mention: 2025 Tesla Cybertruck
- Retail price: starts at $99,990
- Horsepower: 600-834, depending on the model
- Travel distance: 325 miles per charge
- Best for: Speed and self-driving capacity
The Cybertruck is best for speed. It’s the fastest electric truck on the market at present, and it rips to 60 miles per hour in 3.9 seconds for the standard and 2.6 seconds for the Beast model. However, for safety reasons, if you plan on racing around at maximum speed, this is governed to 131 miles per hour.
The massive dual and tri-motor models’ towing capacity is around 11,000 pounds, while the cargo bed carries 2,500 pounds. The battery manages 122.4 kilowatts, and it can overcharge for an additional 136 miles on all-wheel drive and 128 miles for the Beast model.
If you’re tall, you may find the sloped roofline of the cab somewhat limiting, so anyone over six feet should reconsider. The onboard storage is spacious, but the in-cab storage is slightly limiting, only accommodating a single passenger’s luggage.
The Cybertruck is one of the heaviest electric trucks on the market, at 6,901 pounds, so if road conditions aren’t optimal, it may not offer the mileage per charge you expect. The weight may also exceed road restrictions in certain urban centers, placing you in violation of local ordinances limiting road use to 6,000 pounds per vehicle. As an added extra, the Cybertruck is available with full Self-Driving Mode.
Please keep in mind though that this is the ugliest car on the market and will likely draw stares of disdain from passersby. It’s also one of the most recalled cars of all time, lacking basic safety features. We reviewed the truck in 2024 and for the perks it came with, we seriously weren’t impressed.
Which Electric Truck Will You Choose?
An electric truck is a functional, powerful vehicle, and with fantastic load capacity and towing options, you’re sure to find it helpful in your day-to-day business dealings.
These trucks are fun to drive, offer the latest technology, and show how far the electric vehicle market has come. They have surprisingly good long-distance capacity, and the faster charge times will make you feel much better about taking your electric pickup on the highway for a road trip.
