Grand Theft Auto VI is supposed to release on November 19, 2026. It’s launching on Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5, with pre-orders officially opening. But when will it release on PC? That’s a complex question because we don’t have an official release date, but we can take a guess. Here’s when we think GTA 6 will come out on PC and Steam.

When Will GTA 6 Release on PC?

After multiple delays, with an initial May 26, 2026, release date for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, it seems GTA 6 will launch on November 19, 2026. However, for now, there is no official release date for PC. Rockstar is likely making this choice to spend more time perfecting the PC port, as this is standard for the studio. More on that later.

GTA 5 cost $137.5 million to develop, but ended up costing $250 million. If the console version has an online equivalent, and it probably will, it costs money to keep the servers running. PC ports need polish, or an Arkham Knight scenario is going to happen again. Waiting for perfection, or close to it, means getting a better product.

Why Release GTA on Console First?

With that said, it’s strange that Rockstar is prioritizing the console market. PC revenue growth is 6.6%, compared to 4.4% for consoles, and PC is projected to surpass console revenue by 2028. If money is what Rockstar is after, shouldn’t they stick to the PC market?

Maybe, but GTA is also seen as a console game. It’s likely that Rockstar is appealing to their traditional console market. This may also be an apology for the abysmal trilogy remaster.

When Do We Think GTA 6 Will Release on PC?

To guess when GTA 6 PC will release, we need to look at when other GTA games were released for comparison. GTA 4, GTA 5 and GTA 5 Enhanced had PC ports.

Here’s a table of the release schedule between console and PC:

GameConsolePCTime to PC
GTA 4April 29, 2008December 2, 2008Seven months
GTA 5 (360 + PS3)September 17, 2013April 14, 201519 months
GTA 5 (ONE + PS4)November 18, 2014April 14, 20155 months
GTA 5 EnhancedMarch 15, 2022March 4, 202536 months

It’s clear that the release dates for each PC release are getting longer. This makes sense as games become more complex and game development becomes more expensive.

Rockstar also has a history of delaying PC release dates. GTA 5’s PC port was supposed to come out in the summer of 2014, but it was delayed until 2015. The PC port was well-loved and made it possible to mod it to oblivion. The mod to allow armed citizens was one of my favorites. It made the game harder and gave you a consequence for running civilians over.

With all this information, we think GTA 6 will release in 2029.

Why We Think a 2029 Release Date for GTA 6 on PC

GTA 6 Jason and Lucia

GTA 6 has a late 2026 release date, right before the holiday season. This makes us nervous for a few reasons. For one, this may indicate a rush to maximize profits. For another, it may mean the game will release in a buggy state. If this happens, Rockstar will need time to fix the bugs.

If the bugs are fixed by April 2027, they can then put all their resources into a PC port. There’s no press stating that GTA 6 will have an online mode at launch, or that it will have one at all. It likely will, but that’s the information we have right now. If there isn’t an online mode, then there could be a PC port at the beginning of 2029. If there is, we suspect a late 2029 release.

Wait, GTA 6 Won’t Have Multiplayer?

We’re not sure, and it seems odd for Rockstar to leave this option out. GTA 5’s multiplayer is still incredibly popular, impressive for a game that’s over a decade old. Many creators use GTA 5’s multiplayer mode as a platform for roleplay. One fantasy that’s especially popular is playing the role of a mafia boss. However, missions, heists and jobs aren’t updated frequently anymore. This alone is a good enough reason for GTA 6 to have a robust multiplayer system.

For now, Rockstar is promoting GTA 6 as a ‘single-player experience.’ We don’t know if this means the core game is single-player or the entire game will be this way. However, this seems to suggest that online will not be part of the initial launch.

Is There a Possibility of a Surprise PC Steam Launch?

GTA 6 Cal Hampton

Some games became hits after shadow dropping. Hi-Fi Rush comes to mind, a game that became a critical and media darling overnight without any hype around it. For a time, there were even rumors that Rockstar would surprise launch GTA 6, but those rumors were pretty unfounded. It would be very difficult for Rockstar to do this, considering GTA’s popularity.

We also doubt this is happening, since many will upgrade their PCs just to play this game. With a surprise PC launch, they’re limiting their audience to people with high-powered machines. PC parts are still expensive, and Rockstar needs to give players time to save for GTA 6.

Will the PC Version of GTA 6 Get a Physical Release?

Likely not. The industry is phasing out physical releases, even if this decision isn’t popular with the general gaming community. PlayStation announced in July 2026 that physical disc production would cease in January 2028, and the decision received significant backlash.

Physical PC games were already a rarity, thanks to the convenience of Steam. For now, we doubt there will be a physical release for any GTA 6 copies. While you can get a game box at GameStop, Walmart, or wherever game cases are sold, they will only contain a code.

You’ll Be Waiting a While for a GTA 6 PC Launch

You’re going to be waiting a few years before a true GTA 6 PC launch. Based on Rockstar’s release date trends, we suspect the PC edition will come out in 2029. While you wait, you could purchase a console edition or replay GTA 5 or the other games in the series.
