What Is a Remastered Game?

A remastered game is a re-released version of a game that remains faithful to the original title. It tweaks the controls to run on the latest computers or consoles. It also slightly enhances visuals to keep up with the game’s high-definition graphics, making the game more appealing. 

Many developers would compare it to fine-tuning an existing product. That said, some options may feature newer mini-games or dialogue updates that make it much more appealing to both first-time players and avid fans. 

What Is a Game Remake?

A game remake also re-releases a title, but it involves much more change than you’d think. Developers would essentially take the whole concept and reimagine the game from the ground up, introducing new mechanics that make it feel fresher. 

These kinds of games can still have familiar elements like the characters and story, but the overall mechanics and maps could be entirely different from their original versions. It’s undoubtedly a riskier move that either creates a better or worse game. 

Difference Between Remake and Remaster

A remaster and a remake are both iterations of an existing game. However, the former refreshes the game and keeps the core of it the same. The latter takes the core and molds it into something newer, something that surprises even the franchise’s oldest gamers.

Remasters and remakes are better in their own right. If the goal was just to make the original playable again, a remaster is the way to go. If developers wanted to recreate the game from scratch, a remake is so much better. 

There are moments when a game may have benefited more from a remaster than a remake, and vice versa. For example, Star Wars Episode 1: Jedi Power Battles was dubbed the worst remaster in 2025 because it was a game with already lackluster mechanics and minimal nostalgia. Had it been a remake instead, it could have potentially seen more success from even first-time Star Wars fans.

1. Spyro Reignited Trilogy

Spyro was such a fun platformer that screamed nostalgia for many gamers. Thankfully, the Spyro Reignited Trilogy remastered all three games within the series. Graphics were improved without completely kicking the original, and the NPCs get more expressive personalities that catch you off guard in the best way possible.  

2. BioShock

Bioshock was an underrated tactical shooter with numerous revolvers, shotguns and grenade launchers. The remastered version stays true to the mechanics of the first game, which makes it ideal for any older fans who want to give it a whirl. It’s also key to note that the graphics had a glow-up like no other. 

3. Metroid Prime Remastered

If you wanted an exploration action-adventure-centered game, Metroid Prime Remastered is a great pick-me-up. It improves numerous parts of the original that help it hold its own against more well-known first-person shooters. Its success could be attributed to improving the controls and graphics without fully removing the learning curve and nostalgia that come with it. 

4. Mass Effect

Mass Effect had delivered one of the best single-player gaming experiences. Thankfully, the Mass Effect Legendary Edition remasters the three games in the series to help you relive the high. There is downloadable content like weapons and armor that can add extra spice to your playthrough. 

5. Baldur’s Gate 1 and 2

Baldur’s Gate 3 gained so much praise for its thorough character creation system, and it’s easy to see why. It features 12 classes, 46 subclasses and numerous appearance adjustments. But before this game blew up, it had humble beginnings like Baldur’s Gate 1 and 2. Their remastered versions are worth a shot to get a glimpse of what an open-world RPG was like at first.

1. Final Fantasy 7 Remake

Final Fantasy 7 (FF7) features cutting-edge graphics and beautiful storylines. The FF7 Rebirth that followed up the FF7 remake truly had the potential to be Game of the Year back then. And honestly, part of the reason why it’s one of the best ones in history is that it made a clear mark that elevated the franchise.

2. Resident Evil 2 and 4

The Resident Evil franchise has some of the most captivating horror games, with the second one feeling like the superior edition within the series. That said, the Resident Evil 2 Remake was simply a compelling reimagining of the story. The Resident Evil 4 Remake takes it a step further because of how vivid and modernized the graphics and gameplay feel. 

3. Silent Hill 2

Another exceptional horror game remake is Silent Hill 2. Its original counterpart was already creepy enough, but the combat aspect within the more recent version just feels impressive. It’s definitely worth a play even if you haven’t experienced the first Silent Hill games. 

4. Demon’s Souls

Black Mesa was a long remake in the making, considering that Half-Life was already a masterful game in itself. Thankfully, it was worth the wait because of how fascinating the graphics and gunplay became. Plus, a recent update removed lingering performance issues for a smoother game.
