When you read Niagara Falls reviews, you typically hear all the oohs and ahhs about how much of a natural spectacle it is or how breathtaking it is. You’ll even come across some horrific and chilling tales here and there. But in reality, visiting this space can be quite a roller coaster. From the side attractions to the journey to get there, here are some stories to actually give you a chuckle.
1. The Waterfalls Are (Surprise) Full of Freezing Water
It can be hard to describe what Niagara Falls is like in person. And while it wasn’t like a frozen waterfall, Katie MacLeod details what it was like to experience it through a comical boat ride:
“From land, the American Falls and Bridal Falls don’t seem that impressive, but from the water, when they’re thundering down 181 feet onto deadly-looking rocks below, their power is obvious. The captain paused the boat near them, allowing us to take in the spectacle while regaling us with the facts, figures, and history of the waterfall.
“… It happened so fast that it was overwhelming. One minute I was looking up in awe at the water powering over the edge of the rock, and the next all I could see – and feel – was water. And as quickly as it had begun, it was over.
“The Hornblower ‘Voyage to the Falls’ Niagara Cruise lasts about half an hour, but to me it felt like 10 minutes. We hadn’t even disembarked before my parents and I were talking about going on the cruise again. It was that incredible, and that overwhelming, we felt we needed to experience it for a second time.
“Before then, though, we needed to warm up, and Tim Hortons provided the perfect opportunity. Tim Hortons is apparently the Starbucks of Canada, and luckily there was one a quick walk from where the boat docked. Everyone in the tourist centre was ridiculously friendly (it seems what they say about Canadians being nice is true), and my Mum’s bright pink hat was a popular topic of conversation.”

2. Maybe Skip Tussaud’s Wax Museum at Niagara Falls
Here’s how David Whitley weighs in on his visit to the odd place near one of the best natural wonders of the whole wide world:
“The waxworks museum in Niagara Falls is open late. And that’s excellent news, because by far the best time to experience it is after a fair few drinks in the gaudy bars of the Canadian Vegas.
“It is at this time that meeting a waxwork that looks a bit like one of the Bee Gees, but turns out to be one-dimensional action star Jason Statham, invites guffaws of laughter rather than puzzlement.
“…Queen Victoria has the ham-faced look of former British PM David Cameron, Beyonce looks suspiciously white and closer to Ivanka Trump than Mrs Z, while Bruce Willis comes across as a snooker player.
“Nicole Kidman and Halle Berry have a peculiar robotic quality to them, Daniel Craig looks more like former Liverpool and England footballer Steven Gerrard than James Bond, while Tom Cruise is James McEvoy after eating cheese for three days straight and suffering the cheese-sweat consequences.”

3. The Niagara Falls View Boosted Their Breakfast Bill to Over $100
It’s typically best to plan your food ahead of time to save money. Here’s an excerpt of what Mira Nabulsi had to say when she visited what she calls as “Canada’s biggest tourist traps” recently:
“We were super hangry when we finally spotted an IHOP, International House Of Pancakes. Actually, we saw one out of the five that were within a 10-minute drive of one another, because apparently that’s a thing in Niagara Falls.
“… First, we didn’t want to pay for parking because Niagara Falls parking costs so much money and it’s a waste if we’re only there for an hour or two tops. So we found an IHOP that luckily has free parking. We went to the IHOP at 6732 Fallsview Blvd. in Niagara Falls, located on the 25th floor and it has an uninterrupted view of the falls.
“Wow, an amazing view and cheap food. We’ve hit the jackpot,” I thought to myself at the time. I was fooled, because obviously nothing beautiful ever comes cheap. The minute I opened this menu, I noticed that prices were nothing less than $30, and this is supposed to be a fast-food breakfast spot. What did I miss?
“I wondered: “How is this menu pricier than the fanciest breakfast spots in Toronto? I need someone to explain to me.” The chairs were plastic, the table was not clean and the maple syrup handle was messy. Also, the mayonnaise came in a packet, which is not what a $30 breakfast looks or feels like.”
Nabulsi goes on to say that American tourists will start to think that Canadians are crazy for paying premium prices for IHOP. Granted, she does say that the service was more or less terriffic and that staff did deserve a high tip.

4. Is Niagara Falls Actually a Dystopian Place
Reddit user LeBurnerAccount1 dubs Niagara Falls the weirdest place in the province that he’s ever visited on the Ontario. While it grinded many locals’ gears, it can have a slightly humorous tone to it:
“I was in the city yesterday to go hiking, and the hike by the Gorge was amazing!! However, the vibe of the city itself is so weird. You have Clifton Hill with all the hotels and buildings all glammed up and looking nice but also extremely dated. Then you go over two blocks, and you’d think you’re on the American side of the border with all these wood panel houses and cracked narrow streets.
“Everything is spaced put really weirdly, half the city looks abandoned and the other half looks like they threw lipstick on a pig. The falls are beautiful but everything here just seems… off. Like a populated liminal space.”
One user comments that there have always been three distinct areas in the space—the tourist strip, the suburban housing, and the post-apocalyptic wasteland in between.
5. TFW When You Get All the Photos and Videos on a Soaking Wet Phone
It’s important to have a mindful activity when traveling. Never looking up from your phone and ignoring the view right in front of you is not one of them.
6. Doing a 63 in a 45 Zone and Taking Two Days To Get To Niagara Falls is Diabolical
Traveling to Niagara Falls can be brutal, but this story just shows how chaotic yet memorable it can be. Hopefully, he didn’t have any Waterfall tires equipped for an even bumpier ride.
