Which Automakers Are Most Guilty of Planned Obsolescence?

Planned obsolescence is the practice of designing products with a short service life or making them harder to maintain so consumers replace them sooner. In the auto industry, it can manifest as expensive repairs, limited parts availability, proprietary software or bodywork meant to discourage long-term ownership. Such decisions create more waste, increase manufacturing emissions and encourage the disposal of otherwise usable vehicles.

No automaker publicly admits to intentionally designing cars, SUVs and pickup trucks for obsolescence. However, regulators, repair advocates and consumers have criticized many brands for design choices that shorten a vehicle’s practical lifespan or make maintenance unnecessarily difficult. In the hearts and minds of keen observers, these marques are the worst offenders.

Volkswagen

Volkswagen has earned a decent street cred for building cars that are enjoyable to drive. Still, ownership costs can climb as the vehicles age.

Critics point to complex engine designs, tightly packaged components and costly repairs that often require specialized tools and diagnostic software. Many Volkswagen models have a decent reputation among consumers for being reliable, including the Atlas, the Jetta and the Tiguan. Nevertheless, repair complexity often makes older automobiles uneconomical to keep on the road.

Modern Volkswagen models also rely heavily on electronic control modules. When a module fails, replacing it may require dealership programming instead of a simple parts swap.

Independent repair shops have become increasingly vocal about the growing reliance on proprietary software, which limits affordable repairs and encourages owners to trade in aging vehicles rather than fix them.

BMW

BMW vehicles consistently rank among the most technologically advanced luxury cars. Having said that, such sophistication comes at a cost.

Many components are designed as integrated assemblies rather than individually serviceable parts. A failed sensor, for example, may require replacing an entire module rather than just the inexpensive component.

The company also relies extensively on electronic coding and software configuration after repairs. Even relatively simple replacements can require dealer-level programming tools. As vehicles age and warranty coverage expires, these repair costs often exceed what owners are willing to pay, leading to premature retirement of otherwise functional Bimmers.

This approach doesn’t necessarily mean BMW purposely designs cars to fail quickly. The company preferred not to deal with the negative press surrounding the third-generation X5’s reliability issues with the fuel system and climate control. Still, convoluted repairs can significantly shorten the economically viable lifespans of the German automakers’ vehicles.

Stellantis

Stellantis has faced recurring criticism for reliability issues across several of its brands. Jeep and Ram, in particular, have made headlines due to underhood fires, software glitches and mechanical failures.

Models equipped with complicated transmissions, electronic systems and infotainment platforms have generated numerous complaints over the years. While not every vehicle suffers from these problems, recurring failures can become expensive once warranties expire.

The company has also increasingly adopted software-dependent systems that require dealer diagnostics for repairs. Combined with rising parts prices and the growing integration of electronics into mechanical systems, owners may find it more practical to replace older vehicles than continue repairing them.

Repair advocates argue that these trends contribute to functional obsolescence. Engineering complexity appears to be the primary driver, not deliberate intent, but the result is the same. 

Mercedes-Benz

Mercedes-Benz is synonymous with cutting-edge engineering and an esteemed trendsetter, like when it adopted electronic stability control systems before any of its rivals did. That innovation often comes with trade-offs, though.

The company’s modern vehicles rely on dozens of interconnected electronic control units, advanced driver assistance systems and proprietary software. When a single electronic component fails, diagnosing and replacing it frequently requires factory-approved diagnostic equipment. Independent repair shops rarely have the necessary software to handle the job.

Furthermore, more observers are accusing the brand of increasingly integrating hardware and software in ways that limit repairability. Many components must be electronically paired with the vehicle after installation, while certain convenience and performance features now require software licenses or subscription services. These practices don’t necessarily reduce a car’s mechanical lifespan, but they can significantly increase the cost and complexity of keeping an older Mercedes on the road.

Merc is among the automakers embracing the software-defined vehicle. While over-the-air updates can add new features and improve performance, they also give the manufacturer greater control over how vehicle systems function throughout the ownership experience. Right-to-repair advocates argue that this growing reliance on proprietary software and manufacturer authorization shifts ownership away from consumers, making independent repairs more difficult and encouraging replacement over long-term maintenance. 

GM

Pundits say that GM pioneered planned obsolescence in the early 20th century.

The automaker, under former executive Alfred P. Sloan Jr., emphasized frequent model changes and annual styling updates, making aesthetics as important as mechanicals. The company’s model-line hierarchy used economic status to justify upgrades. These policies had encouraged owners to buy new ones even when their existing cars were still roadworthy.

Modern GM vehicles draw flak from critics for different reasons. Increasing reliance on proprietary software, subscription-based connected features and electronic systems can make long-term ownership more expensive. Some repairs require software pairing or dealership programming, while discontinued parts for older models can become difficult to obtain.

Together, these factors may reduce a vehicle’s useful life from an economic perspective rather than a mechanical one. 

Tesla

Vertical integration is one of the reasons Tesla dominates. The same strength has prompted naysayers to crown the Elon Musk-led brand as a culprit behind modern planned EV obsolescence.

Tesla has tied ownership to software, over which it has complete control. Numerous vehicle functions, replacement parts and repairs depend on its authorization. Some salvaged components have historically required software activation to function correctly. Having to jump through this hoop negates the usefulness of recycled parts and inflates repair costs.

Independent repair advocates have blasted the company for restricting access to parts, limiting service documentation and capitalizing on software locks. To Tesla’s credit, it has expanded access to service manuals and some parts in recent years. Still, some repairs require factory authorization or specialized equipment.

The exorbitant cost of battery replacements adds fuel to the flame. Replacing a Tesla battery can cost more than $21,000 when out of warranty. To be fair, it may be more of a technical limitation and less of planned obsolescence. After all, BYD has overtaken Tesla in battery technology, offering better thermal stability and safety.

Outsmarting Planned Obsolescence Offenders

When it comes to planned obsolescence, nobody in the auto industry has clean hands. It’s a proven and successful marketing tactic that has generated untold revenue over the decades. If you have strong opinions against this practice, you can make a stand by not giving in.

Fight the urge to replace a perfectly serviceable vehicle, and learn basic maintenance tasks to extend its service life as much as possible. Understand what constitutes an automobile in good condition, allowing you to buy a reliable used replacement if you must retire your old ride. These decisions won’t stop automakers from planning the immediate obsolescence of their products, but at least you’ll have a dependable means of transportation without playing their game.
